Appalled that discrimination
of caste and gender is still so widespread, the first phase
of Namaste Banepa's "simply education for life"
campaign benefits those most in need – those of the
so-called lower castes and girls.
• The female literacy
rate in Nepal stands at 28% while the male literacy rate
is 63%.
• Members of so-called
low castes cannot enter
local temples and in many cases, cannot attend the same school
as those of so-called higher caste children.
• Farm children, mainly
girls, have to walk many kilometres a day to collect fodder
for livestock and water the household's daily usage. (more

More than one school
has been incorporated into Namaste Banepa's target area, ensuring
that students are placed in the school nearest to their home.
"The
Convention on the Rights of the Child
adopted by the United Nations in 1989 reaffirms
that all children have rights that must be respected,
protected and promoted. Article 28 states that
"All children have a right to education".
In some places around the world, this just does
not happen."
